I wasn't able to place both the small and large wooden chests anywhere, always getting the message I need to be inside my land parcel; maybe I need to finish the house building before?

Placed the leather chest inside the house, but after I finished building the walls I was not able to access the chest anymore.

Am I doing something wrong?

Same here, as a mage it looks like you can wear them with only a casting mana cost drawback, in fact then you discover you can't cast at all.
I would let mages to wear medium armor and cast, or fix the description in the crafting window.
