      @nelchael said in Races:

I never said every race can't do both PvP and PvE. That would be daft. But don't forget, the fractured motto is "THREE RACES, THREE GAMEPLAYS", not "THREE PLANETS, THREE GAMEPLAYS". Your race selection determines your home planet, and even if some players end up moving to another planet, that doesn't change the fact that most hardcore PvE players will play as beastmen, and most PvP players as demons. That's the whole point.

Not necessarily. It will certainly be quicker to get into the action if you pick the race that starts out with the proper alignment and planet, but there might be other consequences of Abominations, Angels, or just racial perks in general that could encourage players to specifically cross alignments from the "wrong" race.

Even if there wasn't, top-level players often intentionally challenge themselves and will interpret playing the "wrong" race as such a challenge.

There's Revan in the KotOR games, Handsome Jack in some of the Borderlands games, Chara in Undertale, and those examples are just from video games. Then there's the Joker in Batman (and too many other comic book villains to count), of course Darth Vader in Star Wars, Bane in the Bane Trilogy books, Moriarty in Sherlock... What counts as a fascinating story is of course arguable, but those are all popular stories that are to some large extent defined by the villains' points of view.

You have some very low standards for "a fascinating story". Revan I can grant (with the complication that his story is interesting specifically because he is not a villain), but once you cited Undertale you kind of lost me.

      Also, Moriarty is not a "post-early 1900s" villain; he's from 1893.

@Dinok said in Money & Kickstarter:

I suppose there will be some kind of currency (to buy and sell weapons, food, items, ...). So, this currency will be phisical? I mean, if we die, players could loot our items and our money?

I'm quite certain that any money carried on hand will be dropped on death. There will most likely be a banking system you can deposit money into to prevent this.

@target said in Money & Kickstarter:

Kickstarter will start in June and only last thirty days. Pre-alpha will be at the end of the year. You're not going be able to play the game before or during kickstarter, but by the sounds of it, they'll still be selling crowdfunding packages after kickstarter so you might be able to buy one after pre-alpha.

You will be able to purchase most of the packs through the official website that will launch after Kickstarter, but not all offers will be available. It was specifically clarified that lifetime VIP is only available through the Immortal tier during Kickstarter and won't be available afterward.

Is that related to this at all?

The most fascinating stories tend to be told from the antagonist's point of view.

My experience with post-early 1900s antagonists does not correlate with this assertion

@jetah If a player is ejected or have the impossibility to enter in a guild because of this "build"... better to him if he want to have fun isnt'it ? How you could have fun in guild like that If you can't play like you want ?

That's his entire point. Every worthwhile guild is at least mildly competitive and he's concerned that giving people raw numbers will encourage munchkin guilds, making it so nobody can find a guild that lets you play your own character and not, essentially, one of theirs.

Else, when you have 400 skills I think a log (with a switch enable/disable) could be usefull to understand why you can't kill a mob in an efficient way

I think it'll be pretty obvious when you're not "killing a mob efficiently", by virtue of it not dying when you hit it with things

    • RE: Hey, when is the game being released?

The prealpha will begin in the next few months. The alpha may be later this year or next year. Beta may be in 2 or 3 years. The game may find full release in 3 or more years.

The Kickstarter begins 1st of June and will allow you to buy into beta or alpha access. Prealpha access is based on Foundation progress, though.

@fibs Dark Age of Camelot and Everquest were two of the most modded games I have played in my life, both had bans for it. Almost no one in the entire history of playing was banned in those games. Heck, more people were banned in Project 1999, an emulated server than actual live Everquest for using ShowEQ and EQ Atlas.

    • RE: Current real* jobs/careers

I'm confused. Do you mean a real job? But you said "younger players".

I've been a digital artist for probably about 15 years and unfortunately have only recently started taking it seriously, so it hasn't become a job proper just yet. I'm hoping to start putting out art more regularly and fixing my technique to be faster so I can fit more detail into the same amount of time.

I also want to get back into music, writing, and game dev like I used to do as a hobby. We'll see

VR makes a lot of players very sick very fast, especially when it isn't 1st person, and it isn't a good idea for the game I don't think.

    • RE: In-depth pet/mount progression.

The idea I had for my eventual MMO was that every single NPC addition to your character was a Companion and any Companion could be a battle ally, a mount, a pet, or all three; they are all condensed into the same system.

For instance, you could ally with Myrrh, a very small three-tailed "firefox" (kitsune) who joins you as a battle ally. When you made your Companion Link thingy with her good enough you'd unlock her super form which is a much larger kyuubi that you could ride as a mount. You can then switch Myrrh back and forth between the two forms.

    • RE: History behind your profil picture

You opened up a bit of a tangent with this one, ahem hem

I drew my profile picture! She's my darling little wishdragon Rhubarb.

      Rhubarb

      Rhubarb

Wishdragons are somewhere between fairies and genies. They're the only dragons that are naturally Pirelic (i.e. bipedal) and otherwise don't really look like dragons, but they're affected by all the dragon magic and can hear the Call, so they must be dragons yeah?

They live in the half-awake kingdom of Tir na Nog, where they never want for anything. Rather than make them happy this bores them to tears since they've got nothing to do, and so they go on pilgrimages throughout Elysia and use their magic to grant wishes for less fortunate people (hence "wishdragon"). Slightly confusingly they call themselves "wishers" and their wish recipients "wishees".

Every wishdragon carries a little wish bible with them that tells them all the rules. It's in the wishdragon language that nobody else understands, and even if they did, every copy disappears if a non-wishdragon tries to take it.

Rhubarb in particular is extremely sweet and thoughtful, and has a great head to memorize the wish book, but she's often very clumsy with her magic, so Tir na Nog has... encouraged her to go on a pilgrimage. She's not exiled though, and over her adventures she gets better at the whole wishin' business.

One of the most important elements of wishin' is that a wishdragon is free to interpret and even muck a wish however she likes, as long as she acts towards a sincere belief of the wishee's best interests (i.e. the exact opposite of a leprechaun.) Thanks to her imagination and compassion, Rhubarb is extremely good at this... as long as she doesn't honestly screw up her magic.

Don't display health bars or send health / damage numbers to the client.

The only indication they get of their health level is their screen turns redder at lower health and there's an effect if they take more than a certain percentage of their health in one hit.

you have no imagination do you.

You don't know me at all, do you.

Imagination has to be tempered. Simply throwing wild ideas around without refinement because they're "imaginative" isn't productive.

Fractured is going to have a lot of problems and limitations due to its insistence on 1-instancing every part of the game world, and adding in more and more concepts that simply don't line up with this isn't helping how much that'll ruin the game's focus on an immersive world.

I love secret paths, I found a secret path in the original EverQuest, the the Castle Mistmoore and its discovery helped pave the way to the final encounters. Secret passages and traps are a one trick pony now though, now that there are dedicated game cartographers and web sites built around them secrets are common knowledge fast. I would hope that they do put in secret stuff, one time finds, and they are done. That would have everyone pushing walls tugging torches and clicking static stuff in hopes of magic treasure.

I think having a dungeon full of whackos banging their heads against the walls would be even more awkward and damaging to the game world. That belongs in a parody like a cartoon
