    • RE: Anti-Hack/Cheat/Bot

There would be one system to prevent botting, but it's so rigid that would severely lower real player population as well so gaming companies do not use it.

      System:

Require EVERYONE to create an account using credit card (real info read). Even if game is not subscription.

Whenever someone cheats / hacks / exploits / uses a BOT -- ban that person (through his credit card info). Now this person can no longer make a new account ever, not using other credit card, not in any way (unless he goes to police and changes his name, and people can't just do that every day, and 99% wouldn't anyway even if they could).

That way would prevent botting for sure, as once botter is banned, he can no longer come with a new account.

However this would also deter all the players who want to play anonymously from playing the game, and of course it's why gaming companies will never use that since they do not wish to cut their profits by reducing amount of players that will play their game. πŸ™‚

Same I like soloing, and if everything needs to be in groups the bots will just run 10/20 bots at a time in a grp

Not if it requires tactics like dungeons do. πŸ˜‰

Intelligent CC, boss aoe mechanics that need to be avoided, other tactics...

Of course problem with this would be with people that like to solo. They couldn't gather mats, so they would need to be crafters and offer other services in order to trade with people who do group content.

But as long as MMO has "solo content" it will also have a "bot content"... because solo = "bot able"... this is simply how it is.

    • RE: Anti-Hack/Cheat/Bot

I always imagined some mmo, where you could only gain in game gold by doing a challenging group content (that includes group tactics and isn't easy to do). Outside of group content, you could still craft and stuff, but you would need mats and gold from group content to do that.

If you were a solo player and didn't wish do a group content, you could still be a crafter, and accept mats and gold from other people (as a fee) to craft for them.

In this way bots couldn't just randomly farm mobs or do automatized mundane tasks to farm gold. Of course, there could still be "live players" that farm gold for living... but at least bots would be dealt with.

Perhaps cosmetic pets and battle pet, if out at same time, could have some interaction as well.

Play together while running around the player. Or perhaps even visual... maybe a special cosmetic pet that would change color based on what battle pet is following player at the moment. Plenty of possibilities here. πŸ™‚

For me vertical progression games feel a bit "lame". People gear up, kill lower geared player and go around bragging how they are pros. Lame...

Horizontal progression game, where everything depends on your knowledge and skill, how you will make you deck and know how to use it... that on the other hand is awesome.

This is why I'm following Fractured MMO. Because it's going in this direction.

Anti hack systems are good to have, as long as they aren't rootkits.

If I had to wager my own guess.. I'd guess common gear will be of "broad spectrum"... bit of each stat, bit of each resistance...

Further tweaking this gear will require more effort and more materials, for maximum tweaking more rare materials will be needed.

More tweaked gear will become "specialised gear".. uber fire resistance armor... or fully maxed out fire damage.. stuff like that.

It makes more sense for common gear to be broad spectrum, so people can start off easy, and do a bit of everything, but to head out against specific hard monsters, they will need to specialize those particular stats that are good vs this monster type.

Yeah, rarity is not just a mark of "how powerful the gear is". It's just the mark of how rare it is. πŸ˜‰

Weaker gear piece can be more rare then more powerful gear piece.

@Pluto said in People who buy a founders pack today get more than yesterday:

Since mobs are clearly not the source of β€œhigh end” uber pwn weapons, what’s the point of killing them?

They will be source of materials that you will need to craft and customize weapons.

No mobs killing = you will not be able to tweak your weapons to be "more powerful" against different particular monster types.
Tweaking stats around does indeed make your weapon more powerful for specific situations (regardless of total amount of stats remaining equal).

@Tuoni if you still claim that horizontal progression doesn't make your character more powerful (having more spells to chose, and more utility) then you apparently do not grasp the power of horizontal progression.

More spells, and more utility makes your character A LOT more powerful.

Unless someone is a type of player who doesn't want to change decks... and just wants to walk around with 1 deck everywhere, and just grow this particular deck in power, because lazy (dislike) to change decks (for which i have a strong feeling that everyone against pure horizontal progression is because of this particular reason), and thus making excuse how vertical is needed for "game to be fun", when in fact they just want to walk around with same deck everywhere without ever changing it.

Perhaps, having to put in some thought and tweak things around intimidates some people? Perhaps its just being lazy in games, and desire to walk around without changing decks often? I don't know, but regardless, if that is what people are afraid of, I have to remind you... this game is designed with "deck changing" in mind for players to be more effective in various scenarios. Players will need to change their decks around if they will wish to be more effective against different monsters and players encountering them (the game is promoted as such since the start of development).

Walking around everywhere with just one deck will simply not cut it.

And if someone does put some thought into his decks and do change them around, with enough of utility unlocked, he will be a LOT more powerful than players who do not have those spells unlocked.

      • he will be able to kill more monster type MUCH faster, having more deck options available (and knowing how to put them to use)
      • he will be able to kill more players more easily (having more options to counter their more limited decks)
      • he will earn much more in game gold like that, farm more materials, get more PvP prestige, control more territory with his guild... and so on

More Spells = More Power (there isn't really any discussion about that particular point, this is given)

However, if someone just wants to level up an exact same spells in power, because he wants direct advantage over newer players without needing to invest intellectual effort in his decks, and having to switch them around then such player should simply directly state it like that (i know noone really wants to admit that), and not write "having more spells does not progress you and give more power" because this is simply a silly statement. πŸ™‚

@Gothix Actually I do not need any explanation how horizontal progression works, I am awere of that.

Well it kind of didn't look like it. πŸ˜‰

@Tuoni said in People who buy a founders pack today get more than yesterday:

If level 1 ability is enough to gap the power, why even bother to travel around the world and level up more?

Here you were curious about what's the point of learning new abilities, and new variations of those you already have so that's why I explained it in my post above.

And it also makes huge affect to PvP as well (not only in PvE).

Lets say you are new guy, and you meet someone with everything unlocked... first combat, you are equal (in decks) and you defeat him (through your playing skillz).

He resurrects, and changes his build to the be an efficient counter to build you were using (he knows what you were using if he was observant in combat), he tracks you down and owns you.

He can now keep tracking you and owning you every single time because he has many abilities unlocked and he was able to make a build that counters yours very efficiently, and since you have a fixed starting build you can't beat him with it, so your starting build isn't adequate anymore vs that player so, you can see, even if spells will not grow in power through vertical progression (and gear will also not) having multiple options available certainly still gives big situational advantage regardless of game being "horizontal".

In other words by progressing horizontally your character still grows in power, just in a different way.

So, about what you were typing, not being sure what's the point of unlocking more spells... that's what explanations are for.

@Tuoni said in People who buy a founders pack today get more than yesterday:

I am actually getting quite concerned about the whole project atm. In MMORPGs the RPG part and especially character progression is one of the main cores.

You have no reason to be concerned. πŸ˜‰ The core is safe.

    • RE: People who buy a founders pack today get more than yesterday

@Tuoni because rank 1 spells (which by the way you only have few on start, a major amount of spells you don't have at all but have to learn first) will not be enough to defeat specific monsters around the world.

For monsters that have particular set of stats, and particular mechanics, your rank 1 spell, and your default gear will not be good enough and that monster will own you.

So you will need to customize your gear, tweak it's stats (not grow it in power, just tweak stats around), and you will need different variations of your spells that will behave in different way (not more powerful, just different and more effective vs. that particular type of monster), and then you will have chance to defeat it.

Different spells, and different gear, will not grow in power, but will have different kind of utility, that you will NEED to be able to handle different situations, so if you will not walk around the world and learn the new spells, and you will not customize your gear, that's up to you, but like that you will not be able to do majority of content.

Also having more options, allows you to counter different types of player builds in PvP. If you have few spells that do particular thing, and you meet a player that made "anti build" for that, he will own you, and you will NEED to walk around the world learning different spells to be able to counter different player builds.

All these spells are not more powerful, they are just different in their utility and effects, but you will NEED those spells if you want to be viable for lots of content, that in other case you wont be viable for.

Hopefully, this explained it better. πŸ˜‰

@Tuoni yes in pre alpha a table was presented where spells indeed grew in power, but after some community discussion devs mentioned, that instead of that, we will get several variations of a spell, rather then spell growing in power. πŸ˜‰

Not all spotlight info is up to date (it's old spotlights, so don't stick to them so much, as things can often change or be tweaked). πŸ˜‰

There will be 3 levels in magic and abilities so we know we have that much vertical progression there.

      Not vertical, still horizontal.

Higher rank spells will not grow in power, but will just be modified with different effect, some like modifying gear horizontally.
