      It would be the same damage over a minute but not the same DPS.

      Calculating damage / second (DPS) is a really standard way to measure damage in MMORPGs and actually generally in games. Reason for this is simply because fights are usually short and/or damaging is not constant, and rather fitful.

      Actually, I have never heard of Damage over minute as a damage measure system, and for reason, it is not practical at all. 😉

      min-max take into account 15 minutes to get an average per second. there are hunters and some rogues in WoW that can burst to 30k dps but after that burst they only sustain 5k until their CDs are up then they can burst again. (numbers are guesses but it's to show a point). that dps may be closer to 8k once averaged out. then you have moments where position and movement could impact dps.

      Yeah so? Speaking of WoW, how those weapon damages are presented? Thats right, with DPS.

      the weapon damage is presented per attack. the addons represent it in dps but in raids there's a few. one is dps. the other is dps averaged over the fight. again a burst class/spec will see very high initial dps but it'll lower until the next burst can happen.

      @memokal

      there's a few good spotlights, i highly suggest reading them all. you'll learn quite a bit.

      the problem with PoE and Fractured is Fractured is getting 3 tiers of spells. those tiers will change how the spell works in some way. that's the core of the knowledge. whereas poe is core to have gems and other gems that modify them in a near unlimited combination. Fractured will have 400 (iirc) unique spells with 3 tiers so so 1200 total.

      the system works in PoE because there is no, or very little, pvp. once pvp is in the equation then you have to have a means to easily balance.

      We need a spotlight at this point. I know it won’t be specific but some developer philosophies would be great.

      A wolf and a Udoadra are not of the same species, so that could be possible. Anyway, it will depend also on the race, some will be carnivorous and others herbivorous.

      Now that is something I like! Where my Dearkin actually can stay herbivorous and will not depend on meat recipes.

      Power to the vegans!

      deer have been observed eating meat. sorry for your loss.

      @asspirin

      i built my daoc cleric as dps!

      if there's a disarm then you should have to find your weapon. that's one thing to hurt bots (at little). make CC abilities actually work on the screen (like wildstar).

      weapon or even armor hasn't gone into a bright spotlight. we've just been given these pills, which, while nice, can be shallow at times.

      @asspirin said in Attacks speeds depending on armor ?:

      @Jetah Allright, but what would you suggest for casters in plate? On my mind comes reducing their damage, making them cast spells only once a few seconds (so they couldnt nuke you with X nukes in two seconds), make mana costs for them so huge they would have to sip blue bottle every three spells etc., but would they still enjoy it, if the heavy armor was actually worn only for cosmetic purposes? I wouldn´t. With max INT i would rather do what mages do - magical protection, debuffs on enemy damage and CC so enemy doesn´t even reach me.

      Or simply reduce mage´s damage if wearing plate so they´re balanced on DMG-----DEFENCE scale. But imo with low dmg they will lose purpose.

      i was thinking 'mage plate' or caster plate was more like high-leather to low-chain in defense. not plate but not cloth. to me mage plate (if this is what you're referring to) is more caster friendly while being able to take a little beating. I played DAoC and Clerics could use chain. so it wouldn't quite be like that.

      as for normal plate, i'd say a few spells then they have to drink as the plate wouldn't allow natural mana regeneration. the drink would have to be on a CD so you couldn't spam them. maybe we'd have a mana (or life or energy) transfer spell that could help the mage plate wearer a little. the transfer could be 4:1 (cost 4 to give 1 for mana).

      @Yitra
      the game has trees of magic. so when i say class i'm referring to a tree of magic.

      i'd hate for spells to be bound to weapons because I want a disarm in the game and it'd be pretty op!!!!

      @Jetah said in Magic resistance?:

      in my mind that doesn't make sense. how can a cast of an element be different from a natural element? how can lightning/fire/cold/etc be different?

      How is spontaneously grown love different from drinking a love potion? One is natural, one is magic.

      because the love option is just a means to open and release whatever chemicals that 'love' is the result of. IE it's the same.

      @Jetah It doesn´t, but it´s magic, so it doesn´t have to make sense, right ? 🙂

      @Jetah Either by wearing thick fur you get resist to cold, or it´s not logical until "cold resist" becomes "magic cold resist", because magic damage is separate as we now know and therefore cold damage is the same no matter the source (caster / weather). But now we just play with words 🙂 , my question was rather whether elemental damage is kind of magical damage - it´s not.

      in my mind that doesn't make sense. how can a cast of an element be different from a natural element? how can lightning/fire/cold/etc be different?

      @asspirin
      i was thinking more retribution (thus damage) paladins.

      the DK, at least in WoW, that i'm thinking of is the frost spec which uses frost spells along side melee attacks. think of it as frost enchanced melee weapons. but there's undead which uses diseases along a rez'd ghoul and melee to fight. the blood spec is the tank spec which siphons HP during an attack, not really a melee-mage in the sense here but more vampire/leech which takes spike damage but can self heal.

      that begs the question would casters be prevented from the other 2 melee schools?

      to me a sandbox game shouldn't have those limitations but other limitations.

      if i see this as Eve Online, where the character boost ship abilities and each ship class has different hp, armor, shield and weapon configs. so the ships have a power source. the weapons used part or most of that power. the Amarr were the lasers which used so much power, so their ships had larger capacitors. 2 races uses physical projectiles, 1 of those supplemented with drones and the other race used missiles. it was possible to use any weapon on any ship (assuming it has the mounts for it as not all ships had missile slots) the disadvantage would be the power from lasers (which didn't use ammo until the T2 crystals).

      that might not have helped me...

      what would be sweet, although a programming nightmare, is if the armor modified the spells. but we'll probably get some type of mage plate which wont have as much AR as melee plate but still allow casting. the only problem then is balancing how much plate and mage plate make the person tough and still deal damage.

      but if it's stupid then the fantasy and immersion isn't there (which some people love). it's also a sandbox. which means there shouldn't be any real limits on what we can wear and what we fight with. i do agree that mages in plate can be a problem and should suffer some disability but it shouldn't be impossible.

      there are melee type mages, like the death knight and crusader. paladins cast spells. paladins were once priest that decided to fight on the front lines.

      i've seen the gear you wear determine how much mana you have. so it was persuading casters to wear cloth or leather.

      @Yitra @Znirf

      but i'm asking the difference between a fireball being magic and someone throwing a torch at the same target. i'm asking the difference between someone casting a blizzard and there naturally being a blizzard happening. i'm asking how is magic lightning different from natural lightning. magic is typically based on natural elements. sometimes it's the elementals that grant the user the ability to use those elements.

      if a group of players are headed to a cold location then i expect them to be dressed in warm clothes (or have them in the inventory). if a frost mage decides to attack and cast blizzard while in the cold area, i dont see how the warm clothes wouldn't protect them from this blizzard being cast.
