@phaethonas said in Will we have a kill count in pvp?:

(...)I can tell you that more metrics the better (...) I am in favor of player kill counts, of pve kill counts (e.g. you killed 100 boars), time spent, gold made and gold spent and everything and anything else.

I'm torn there. I like statistics, I love when games provide an API to grab and process data, but for RPGs, I prefer when you don't have 'hard data', but rather 'soft data', simply because that usually allows for better interaction. Every bow contest (Robin Hood anybody?) happened because one can not tell 'I have 95 markmanship and you only 85.
What I'd prefer instead is a title, or reward of sort. A demon that manages to rampage on the beastman planet should certainly gain some influence with his kind!

The main objective of this is to doing this infinitely

'Fractured is neither level-based nor skill-based, and strongly rejects grinding in any form'
There is an endgame, without actually being an endgame, simply because 'your character rarely becomes stronger over time. Instead, it gets more knowledgeable. This happens is many ways, but one above all: the array of abilities at its disposal becomes larger and larger'

Of course, I realize this answer is not explaining much, so it might be a good thing to anticipate the Spotlight on the justice system and PvP rules (which is already planned), since I can't explain it all in just one forum post.

Great, thank you! I'm looking forward to that (and hope that when you find the time to work on this, you're going to include which areas you consider designing as PvE only and how large they are supposed to be). It might be a good idea (IMHO) to include that information explicitly in your Kickstarter as well.

But what if a PvE player doesn't want to do PvP content. Such content is meaningless for that person then, even if isn't consumed as fast as PvE content. 😉

Correct! Which is precisely why you want to narrow down your target audience, so people know. You can not carter to everybody, if you try, you're going to fail and alienate everybody. If the game wants to carter to 'pure PvE', it's going to fail hard on the PvP side if the game wants to carter to PvP, it shouldn't try and support pure PvE. Simply let people know in advance, then nobody can complain.

The developers are already spending time making PvE content though, like dungeons and events.

Ah, you misunderstood me, sorry, I should have explained myself better/more detailed.
PvE content should be developed and should exist, but that is typically the fastest consumed content and a race no developer can win (PvP content is partially 'built' through player interaction, which is why you need less time developing and can keep up at the pace of consumption). If you have an 'open world', where PvP is part of the PvE experience, that takes less time to develop then a purely PvE instanced environment.
      Does that make sense?

(...) I really dk why everyone is sooo sure that beastmen are going to be a walkover to pvp'ers.(...)

I doubt that's the case. Balancing would be trivial (the less PvP you're doing, the higher your bonus due to beastman environment) for that matter.
It's more about people who do not want PvP to happen at all (and try to rally for changing the vision/design of the game accordingly) in specific areas. Because that would directly impact the PvP part (not only does it take development time to develop the pure PvE part, that can't be spent developing PvP content, but the interaction between pure PvE and PvP can easily unbalance PvP).

(...) Personally, I wish they would just turn off PvP completely on Arboreus. Fractured would be one of the first sandbox MMOs without forced PvP if players don't want it, giving them the whole PvE sandbox market to themselves.(...)

@jetah said in Clarification on the target audience:

what about my preference to do some challenging content on Aboreus as an evil human or demon?

@jetah said in Clarification on the target audience:

(...)i don't want arenas. i could play other games for that.

See, that conversation is exactly why I'm hoping the developers are going to define and highlight core design pillars that everybody knows won't be up for debate later down the road, so that everybody can decide early on if they are interested in the game or not. Because the 'MOBA' aspect of Fractured got me interested and if part of the server went PvE only but could still interact with the rest, it would completely destroy the balance of the PvP aspect (just run a dozen bots in save PvE to support your PvP char ^^).

OK are the semantics police happy now?

I am sorry, I didn't mean to go 'semantics police' on you/-r post! I was simply judging by the fact that plenty of other people seemed to be unaware of this and it made a massive difference to them knowing that they could actually be killed on a 'PvE planet' and that very action would be a design choice.

@finland said in Clarification on the target audience:

Niche games does not bring moneys ;). I hope on a game that suits all playstyles like wow has been in vanilla 😉

I dare to strongly disagree. There's a bazillion 'mass market' games out there competing with you, so yes, while you have a larger target audience, they have more choice as well and are less likely to end up with your game. But fortunately the choice is not upon us 😉

(...)Still, from a marketing perspective is not very wise to cut off everyone else unless you already have a strong resource flow, and your niche audience is large enough to support your project. (...)So it's better if you have your target set for yourself, but allow your project cater to a larger audience, at least a bit.

That can backfire quite drastically (if I interpreted your suggestion correctly as 'let people think they would enjoy the game till they paid'). Shroud of the Avatar is a classic example, they allowed the backers to drag them from their original vision to a more 'mass market' design, alienated most every original backer, got horrible Steam reviews and hardly anybody playing the game.

@gibbx said in Clarification on the target audience:

A whole world for PVE'ers where they don't have to worry about being ganked.

That's already an example where you'd be wrong (and because it is so easy to be mislead here, you'd be rightfully unhappy when the game goes life and they stick with their current design).
Demons can invade the beastman world and kill anybody on sight there. It's not easy for them, but it is possible (and likely a 'sport' most PKers are going to aim for at the beginning of the game, since the beastman population makes the 'sore' kill that they strive for).
That point is exactly what I'm trying to highlight with my desire to set a clear vision everybody can see and judge right from the beginning.

    • Clarification on the target audience

While we've gotten some nice design journals and we know the 'general classification' of Fractured as an open world MMORPG with a MOBA influence, most everybody seems to have a divergent idea on the general target audience for the game. As a result of this, the suggestions on what would be good or bad design for the game (and the expectations on the game) are very different (meaning that some people would have to be inevitably disappointed). Would it be possible for you to select some 'core design pillars' that clearly lay out a vision for a specific target audience @Prometheus (and mention how your specific features and functionality enforce that idea in future design journals)?
