    • The psychology of gaming

What comes to mind is, what really tickles your fancy? What is it that draws you into a game and keeps you playing. These can be tough questions when it comes to an MMO because of the longevity of the game and the fact that the game never truly ends.

So with knowing that, what is it in an MMO that has no end game cut scene that truly draws you into the game and keeps you playing it for years.

Feel free to reference other games that kept your attention and focus on the details. This should be a great resource for dynamite to see what they need to focus on to keep attention.

I'll start and say that my favorite memories of games of old was the need to find other players to accomplish almost impossible tasks. The feeling of spending days working on something to finally see it through was a rush that kept me motivated. That coupled with the myth of items that I may have seen a few times, achievements, areas that most people couldn't get to, keep me going. I love to step ahead of other people and do things most people say are impossible. I would gladly smash my head on something 1000 times if one of those times I learned one small thing and progressed.

My psychology is a man of detail, and progression on even the smallest scale. Something a casual player would never notice. Those are the things that fuel my need to play.

    • RE: Hand Holding

@miffi Something I pointed out before is that with the age of internet and communication anything that is remotely easy will be tackled by everyone even without skill. Anything that is hard make take some time but eventually people will share it and it will be tackled by everyone. With how people can communicate, show videos and the such you have to design a game where it should be able to supplement the game with outside content and discussion but not just instantly solve the game for everyone.

I think developers these days need to embrace the fact that information travels faster than the speed of light and design around that fact to make a challenging game that people can work on together. If people are trying to accomplish something they will seek out whatever resources are available to them.

@fibs with re playability in MMOs do you see this in making new characters or so you see this in the family as a whole? With this game wanting you to be able to jump right in, do you think there will be a need to replay for any specific purpose? I think with MMOs the big thing in replayability is the need and desire to log in the next day and continue with the game. Since the game lives and breaths, it's like starting a new game Everytime you login. Is the login worth my time, is a question I constantly ask myself. Are the activities I could be doing in game fun and worth my time?

Things like doing the same quest, word for word day by day is literally the most boring thing any game developer could implement. It just shows the lifelessness of the game, if what you do one day doesn't effect the next and you do it over and over again.

    • RE: Crafting system and lifeskilling suggestion

I like being able to create a tag line description for your gear and or having your name on it so people can find and contact you. It makes it feel like your work can be recognized. If you are the only one to forge the craziest weapon in the game you should be renowned as that crazy good person.

I very much like the subtle detail in these outfits. They look rustic but I could definitely see someone wearing them in this time / tech level.

    • RE: Hand Holding

I don't necessarily mind if the beginning of the game is easy. But if it gets to the point where I don't feel connected with the world or I can just watch netflix while playing I wont be invested enough to just play to play. I just hate getting to the end of a game like an MMO only to find you don't have to go to the world for anything.

Many games these days are doing that where you don't ever need to go into the world for anything and just teleport every which way which makes the world feel insignificant. You should want to feel like the world is alive

    • RE: Question about being a game tester

@nelchael I absolutely support this. While part of the testing should be about how the character progresses and the overall balance of the game, when there are 100,000 people (exaggeration) the balance may be off or stuff will be found that was not found in testing. It would definitely reduce the burden on the players, I agree with MMO alphas and betas it can be very taxing to play the game a ton only to have to do it over and over again and while the finished product might be quite different from the testing, it just somehow seems reduced in quality due to the repetitiveness.

    • Biomes and Expanding the universe

I know this is a bit forward, but after watching the video on what they have already with the biome generating. I think with the lore they should eventually expand the world to different planets like the system they have going now. These different planets should be vastly different and have some that are habitable and some that are non-inhabitable.

This may equate to the same function as moving away from home and the mass of other players and allow people to stake out places in the world. The other function I could see this having is setting up biomes and different worlds that have increasing difficulty and are much harder to go to.

The awe from first arriving on a world where danger is everywhere would make people want to get to the point where they could go there and see what is available. I think some procedural generated worlds with extremely expansive dungeons and depth to them would allow people to explore forever.

Thinking ready player one esque where it would take multiple years for even one of the biomes / planets / areas to be fully cleared would have people that would be needed for building and gathering resources to throw at it. The naturally skilled and tactical to tackle the location and the extremely dedicated to get the the end of one the zones.

Of course having different rewards along the way would allow people to get into the action without having to go full in but giving people the unlimited expanse to just dive as deep as the ocean can take them would bring a truly amazing experience!

edit: I also wanted to note that sword art online the anime does this quite well too where there is just an expanse of time that it takes its players to reach the end of the world, this would allow people that want to invest to do so. It makes those jobs that are sorta capped to have meaning as they would need endless supply to pour into the people taking the leap into the unknown.

Don't be afraid to bring difficulty, this is both the age of information where boss kills spread like wild fire and people will ban together in forums and in game to challenge anything you throw at them. I bet that the difficulty will draw crowds and including people that have craved this adventure for years.

    • RE: Legendary weapons

I think a big thing here is the power creep that you normally see in other games and MMOs. I think in order to combat this and to keep things very balanced you just have to use small numbers.

If you have two different armors and the numbers are 4 and 8 to a certain stat or modifier, then the difference is not really that staggering between a veteran player that has the maximum +8, but it was hard to obtain and totally worthwhile in the longrun. Though there is very little actually effect and the player with the +4 because they just started will feel like they are adequate but still have some room to grow.

When you get to the difference between 4000 and 8000, now there seems to be a huge game and this can cause some problems. Though I think this is fine as long as the actually ratios are kept in check.

    • RE: PK punishment

For PVP, I think there should not be punishments.

I am all for there being a reputation system and some way to know how people may behave, but in reality this should force people to find help or man up and get to work.

@oobenonioo Other unlockable combos down the road would be possible with this model. It makes a character more interesting and gives a more permanent feel to every action that you commit.

I remember you can buy a vip membership as others have said. People voiced their concerns about the VIP veering into p2w territory and it was tailored backa little bit. They are really trying to level the play field between everyone including those who pay extra.

    • RE: Feature Spotlight #6 - PvP, Alignment & Crime

@finland This reaches back to black desert online. I used to play that and when I wanted to PVP i was punished with hours and hours of grinding to get back reputation to enter cities. I thought this was the dumbest idea in the world and I quickly quit as soon as I found that I was mindlessly playing for an activity that I only did now and again. Please shy away from this as it just makes the game tedious and detracts from the scope of what a player might want to do.

World protection through domination. I don't want to protect the world, but I want to dominate those that attempt to destroy it.

    • RE: Mega Update - Cheaper Packs, Pre-Alpha Keys & More

@Prometheus I appreciate the time you and your team took to look at all the things that we notified about in the forums. You are all great on that front.

I am very receptive to how you described and how the changes look to the system of character slots and how the whole system is effected. I really like the changes to each of the kickstarter packs and am definitely thinking about going for that sweet immortality. I really didn't need a Early bird for it personally but that definitely solidifies the choice in my own mind.

You guys are doing a great job and I also am appreciative of the time you took to relook at the different parts of your campaign and reevaluate based on the community feedback. You don't know ( you may ) how much that effects the idea that people will have in their own head of how successful and great of a company you are and are destined to become.
