    • RE: Hand Holding

@miffi Something I pointed out before is that with the age of internet and communication anything that is remotely easy will be tackled by everyone even without skill. Anything that is hard make take some time but eventually people will share it and it will be tackled by everyone. With how people can communicate, show videos and the such you have to design a game where it should be able to supplement the game with outside content and discussion but not just instantly solve the game for everyone.

I think developers these days need to embrace the fact that information travels faster than the speed of light and design around that fact to make a challenging game that people can work on together. If people are trying to accomplish something they will seek out whatever resources are available to them.

    • RE: Are there any unknown / unused professions

I think a good profession would be "Natural Identification". Like we have botanists and other professions that go around and help the world to understand what there is in nature. We should have professions that contribute to themselves and the guild.

On the solo level they could kill monsters to gain bonuses to killing them again. They can identify more lore from different world objects and they could provide extra but slight bonuses to themselves and to their guild. This would be non-stacking between guild mates but you would still get a slight bonus to yourself for having done the work.

@finland More races might be cool but in reality I would just like to see more places. It may be cool to have those places in the game and then expand the lore and races later on into those areas once they are kinda left behind due to progression or whatever else may occur in the economics.

@jetah Instead of keys that were used in previous games like WOW to get into dungeons it would be really cool to have these planets buried behind this technology gap. It would / could require multiple different technologies and research from multiple different planets and or activities to allow access so there must be people working at all places in the world.

    • RE: Player Run Cities and You

@mazikar I absolutely like this idea. I like the idea of the players being able to influence the flow of the game and the area around the game. I think this would allow both the players to allow them selves to build an area of safety but also would negatively effect the players in those safe areas by allowing the people to attack their areas faster.

    • Biomes and Expanding the universe

I know this is a bit forward, but after watching the video on what they have already with the biome generating. I think with the lore they should eventually expand the world to different planets like the system they have going now. These different planets should be vastly different and have some that are habitable and some that are non-inhabitable.

This may equate to the same function as moving away from home and the mass of other players and allow people to stake out places in the world. The other function I could see this having is setting up biomes and different worlds that have increasing difficulty and are much harder to go to.

The awe from first arriving on a world where danger is everywhere would make people want to get to the point where they could go there and see what is available. I think some procedural generated worlds with extremely expansive dungeons and depth to them would allow people to explore forever.

Thinking ready player one esque where it would take multiple years for even one of the biomes / planets / areas to be fully cleared would have people that would be needed for building and gathering resources to throw at it. The naturally skilled and tactical to tackle the location and the extremely dedicated to get the the end of one the zones.

Of course having different rewards along the way would allow people to get into the action without having to go full in but giving people the unlimited expanse to just dive as deep as the ocean can take them would bring a truly amazing experience!

edit: I also wanted to note that sword art online the anime does this quite well too where there is just an expanse of time that it takes its players to reach the end of the world, this would allow people that want to invest to do so. It makes those jobs that are sorta capped to have meaning as they would need endless supply to pour into the people taking the leap into the unknown.

Don't be afraid to bring difficulty, this is both the age of information where boss kills spread like wild fire and people will ban together in forums and in game to challenge anything you throw at them. I bet that the difficulty will draw crowds and including people that have craved this adventure for years.

    • RE: Whats your favorite character Class to play on your first Character

Actually now that I'm more about this. I like really goofy classes that are like healers but more just add some kind of benefit to the team. Like shields, speed, buffs to damage, health, attacking etc. Weird things that allow other team mates to kite around, stay alive longer. Not necessarily your traditional point and click healer but something that turns the tides of war with specialty.

    • RE: Hand Holding

@finland I think one thing that drew me to wow in the first place was that people could go at this place. It wasen't that I could do it but I could live through their accomplishments. It was cool to see the news on people clearing it. It was also super cool that you could aspire to be there one day. I think something like this level of difficulty is what drives people to want to achieve more.

One thing I wrote about in another post is that it would be cool to have something with high difficulty but award things that are not gear. Things that allow you to show off that you have the skill to accomplish something great is good enough and I bet that would get people to do it. If you have a 1st kill in the world golden trophy with the bosses head on it, people would go HAM looking to kill it. Same thing for silver and bronze. Just getting the trophy would be something of myth for most people and that would push people to try harder.

    • RE: Dungeons

I'm not sure what everyone else thinks but I think it would be very interesting to have a dungeon or system of dungeons purely for those that want a challenge.

Just because you have something hard to accomplish doesn't mean the reward needs to be some godly tier of armor or weapons. I think just having some kind of system to get trophies or a way to display your accomplishments to onlookers would be a great feat.

I'm thinking like custom items for guilds or self that can distinguish you from other players but not necessarily just make you one step above every other player due to some stat that you gain. If you think about it, you should already be above them because you have given enough time and skill to finish something they have not.

This will instill some good competition between groups of players (guilds) and players themselves because everyone wants to keep progressing to have something to show it.

    • RE: Hand Holding

@kellewic I like the way that you put it. I have spent many hours in old game wondering this same thing. The fact that I died makes me learn. The fact that I made a new friend allows me to do the same thing in this case. It is about interaction and putting life into your world. If you take it away or don't have a point for the players to interact and do something out of common interest you won't have a following or make a strong game.

I think many game devs see that games are going towards all these hand holdy mechanics in their games forget that the worlds that really thrived had a following that build a backbone of community and life in their game. I think the hand holdy is where games go to die and try to just stay alive with the masses. The games that really hold meaning are ones that bring a new life to the table.

@vannten I'm on EVE right now. Though not necessarily playing all that heavily. Just get on for PVP roams and such in between other games.

    • RE: An MMO Free of Levels and Classes?

@nelchael I kinda like how path of exile does it. You could have many different weapons with many different unique benefits that all are different strengths and weaknesses based on how you build your character. This may be something interesting to experiment with in an MMO world.

    • RE: An MMO Free of Levels and Classes?

@nelchael I think a big thing here is that some stuff needs to be unique or you need to work to get to the special gear. I think it is fine if the first tier of gear is pretty universal but after you play for x number of hours and achieve a lot of strong feats you should be able to get things that are more unique. This allows for the players to challenge themselves to get to where they want to be. The more unique the harder they should be to obtain that way if you see someone in a very hard to obtain item you automatically want to challenge yourself to get to that point.

I hate when people are allowed to have a "catch-up" mechanic. I just think this totally disconnects and discredits the world from where we were to start.

    • RE: An MMO Free of Levels and Classes?

I think that if I am understanding it correctly if we were able to flesh out the stats of our characters with progression and that allows us to build into the things that we like. That way we don't necessarily fall into a class and with swapping around we could go to many different places.

A game like this is like Mortal Online where you can build up your different stats and your weapon proficiency and this allows you to go anywhere.

    • RE: A new MMO

New experiences are the best. I just want to be able to find a game where I can challenge myself and live in a world when I want to get away. When I just end up watching youtube while playing a game I know the game has already failed me.

    • RE: Cosmetic outfits for Guilds

I definitely like the way that it has been done in the past with the tabard being the way to show off the guild. You want to be able to have a living breathing character that should change and adapt as you grow with the world. Taking away this with cosmetics and making the world effect on your character lesser makes this feeling diminish.

    • RE: Hand Holding

I don't necessarily mind if the beginning of the game is easy. But if it gets to the point where I don't feel connected with the world or I can just watch netflix while playing I wont be invested enough to just play to play. I just hate getting to the end of a game like an MMO only to find you don't have to go to the world for anything.

Many games these days are doing that where you don't ever need to go into the world for anything and just teleport every which way which makes the world feel insignificant. You should want to feel like the world is alive

    • Hand Holding

This day in age information spreads so quickly I just hope that there is no hand holding and that they make things genuinely difficult so that we have a game that piques interest for many days to come.
