      @jetah

      Killing them just for staying behind sounds a bit too drastic, I still like my idea of giving them huge debuffs to make sure they can't defeat the boss again more.

      That last one wouldn't really work in an actual MMO. Imagine you start playing after a year, only to find out all the dungeons are empty.

      You might be doing something wrong. I haven't tried Facebook, because even Fractured isn't worth interacting with that website, but Twitter worked perfectly for me.

      It's not exactly a movie, but Yami Shibai is spooky.

    • RE: Web Suggestion

      One way to solve the problem might be by introducing ways for players to gain permanent access to a planet. Those should be hard to accomplish, probably somewhere in-between the difficulties of the Abomination and Angel transformations. Maybe by gaining the favor of a certain God - a Good one for Arboreus, Neutral for Syndesia, and Evil for Tartaros, and then gaining an invitation from a guild that's based on the planet in question.

      If this were to be implemented, I think there should still be some sort of incentive for single-race guilds, maybe by making their guild member limit higher than that of mixed guilds. Otherwise, there'd be no point in making a single-race guild, since you'd only limit your recruitment options and not gain anything. Taking that thought further, maybe there should be a separate category for bi-racial guilds (ie. Humans and Beastmen only) and truly mixed guilds, with the latter gaining the biggest penalty to their guild member limits.

      And to make sure very few people take advantage of these options, in order to preserve Fractured's "Three Races - Three Gameplays" philosophy, even if you manage to gain permanent residence on a foreign planet, there should still be penalties for doing so. Maybe not necessarily combat-related ones, but maybe crafting and studying should take significantly longer.

    • RE: An MMO Free of Levels and Classes?

      @jetah

      In a sense, but again, you level them by completing different tasks, so you might end up "leveling" abilities without meaning to during regular gameplay. Also, the second and third tier apparently won't make a very big difference, since:

      Similarly to what we said about talents, you don’t have to worry about ability leveling creating a too wide power gap between new players and veterans. Sure, leveling up an ability increases its power – be it a stronger effect, increased duration, reduced cooldown, and more. However, they’re always minor differences, mostly interesting on a competitive level. Level 1-2 abilities are more than enough to create effective builds for casual PvE and PvP.

      So it sounds like making a build that combines your main abilities, which would likely be level 2-3 since those are the ones you'd focus on, and a few level 1-2 abilities that you gained randomly, would be possible, if not optimal since it lets you be more creative and make builds that are targeted towards specific situations, party make-ups, regions, and so on.

      The philosophy of Fractured is that, in a contest between a generic warrior-type with level 3 abilities, and someone with level 1 abilities who tweaked his build to be optimal for the situation, the latter should win, assuming equal player skill. As it should be in a truly classless system.

    • RE: what about lore?

      There's plenty of lore in the spotlights, especially the Races and Universe spotlights. There will surely be more in later updates as well, probably mostly about humans for now since that's the culture the devs are focusing on first.

    • RE: An MMO Free of Levels and Classes?

      @maethor Not necessarily, since you don't actually "level" your abilities, it's more like unlocking them through achievements from what I understand. And since you can switch them out anytime at a campfire, that could lead to the players accidentally unlocking a bunch of abilities during regular gameplay without meaning to, then combining them to make very situational builds, as opposed to the all-purpose trinity of warrior-thief-mage. They'd of course have a core set of abilities that they'd actively try to unlock, but those would be just a starting point when deciding on a build, not a generic class.

      Also this is just wishful thinking but boy oh boy would it be nice to be able to dual wield twohanders through some sort of skill/passive.

      It would look a little silly if humans could do something like that. Maybe primal form Bearkin and/or battle rage Infernals could do it for a short time, they look like they're large enough to make it work without looking like anime characters.

    • Ars Goetia - ARGO: The Demon Merchant Guild

      0_1525819649845_goetia.png

      "Even worse, there had been frightening tales of more and more of them leaving the light. Meddling with demons and dark powers..."

      Demons are violent. They are savage and ruthless. That is what you see at first glance, and that is also where most stop looking. But those who know the truth of us, who dwell on this forsaken world, would tell you otherwise. They'd tell you about Ars Goetia.

      Ars Goetia is a demon-centric guild of merchants. Because in a way, demons are the perfect merchants: they can travel to other worlds much more easily than the other races, they always have (admittedly often violent) ways of acquiring more merchandise to sell, and since few outsiders will be foolish enough to travel to Tartaros, weapons and materials from there will be highly valued on Syndesia and Arboreus both.

      For this purpose, ARGO will provide two primary services to exploit those advantages:

      • Summoning: A deal with a member of Ars Goetia will be arranged. The deal-maker and the ARGO member will meet at a pre-approved location on either Syndesia or Arboreus, preferably away from civilization. They will then trade goods as was previously agreed. The physical safety of anyone who attempts to deviate from the terms of the agreed-upon deal is not guaranteed.
      • Familiar: Because there will likely be humans and beastmen who will want to visit Tartaros, but not necessarily die in the attempt, ARGO will provide what is essentially a guide service. An ARGO member with detailed knowledge of the location to be visited will assist the customer in avoiding populated areas and point out places of interest. If the customer dies during the attempt, they will, of course, receive a small discount.

      For evil humans who want demonic equipment to complete their image, craftsmen who want to be able to forge rare gear from Tartaros, and explorers who want to visit the demon planet in relative safety, Ars Goetia aims to be the go-to solution.

      To join:

      • You must be a demon. Exceptions may be made, depending on how multiracial guilds will be handled in-game.
      • You must have a solid grasp on the English language. A good merchant is one that can haggle effectively without either party having to use a dictionary.
      • You must be willing to treat customers decently, unless they decide to forego payment.

    • RE: Dungeons

      @gothix said in Dungeons:

      Hmm, no instancing means that bosses will re spawn fast, to accommodate larger number of players. So that would mean that one group can just stick around and repeatedly kill the same boss over and over not even moving away.

      Or, bosses will have longer re spawn, so with no instancing, and large number of players wanting the boss, it will be practically impossible to get a boss kill for your bestiary.

      Maybe it could be set up so that once your group defeats a boss, it won't respawn for that same group until a different party enters the dungeon. Give it a 24 hour timer, so that a group can beat a dungeon once a day, and make it so that a group needs to contain at least one person who hasn't beaten the dungeon that day in order for the boss to spawn.

      Alternatively, there could be a simple check before each bossfight: "Are you the same group that killed the last boss?" if it returns true, give everyone in the party a huge penalty to damage. That way, it can theoretically be done, but the penalty should be severe enough to discourage all but the most dedicated of players.

    • What We Know About Weapons

      This will be a short summary of everything we currently know about the weapon system that isn't already included in Vengu's compilation thread, just to make it more convenient for new people who don't want to crawl through several articles and forum threads for basic information.

      What we know so far:

      • Confirmed weapon types: unarmed, short sword, great sword, spear, crossbow, bow. More are planned. ->
      • Other weapons that have been mentioned: blunt weapons, polearms, shields, claws, daggers. ->
      • Weapons can be enchanted, either temporarily or permanently, using abilities from the school of Enchanting. ->
      • It is possible to dual wield weapons. ->
      • Archers can choose between different types of arrows, which they can craft. ->
      • Weapons aren't restricted, all races can craft and use all weapons (except for human-exclusive technologies). -> ->
      • Weapons that you didn't personally craft or buy have to be identified before they can be used to their full potential. ->
      • Weapon parameters currently include: damage, speed, range, area of effect (shape and size), accuracy, mobility. ->
      • Humans will be able to use cannons in sieges. They will be phallic. ->

    • RE: Becomming an Angel or Abommination

      If I had a pawn that kept switching sides on me, I'd probably throw that pawn away pretty quickly. That being said, it probably wouldn't be worth it to code an entire separate fallen angel race for the small minority of players who can't decide on their alignment.

      Question: when it comes to race-specific skins, such as the trained wolf mount from the foundation, will angels get a separate skin too, or should we expect to see holy paragons of light riding around on demonic hellhounds?

    • RE: Becomming an Angel or Abommination

      I don't think angels should be able to turn back into demons, simply because Tartaros doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd forgive you for your betrayal just because you decided to be evil again. Maybe Fallen Angels could be a third separate race, achieved by basically betraying both sides until everyone hates you?

      Playing such a character would be a real challenge, but it seems like the obvious solution. Gods don't generally tend to be very forgiving, it would feel strange if you could go back to normal just by switching your alignment back.
