    • RE: Rhykker Mention of "Pay for Convenience"

      @Xzoviac

I think when people discuss wanting a sub it is for the base game. The sub is going to have little conveniences attached as far as we know, so I consider it part of the convenience side of the cash shop

      @Tuoni

AoC is not a MMO right now, it is a battle royal IIRC. Pretty sure they also sold land/houses etc in their kickstarter. Also, I would not really call them a shining example at this point haha

If you can find a successful mmo with JUST cosmetics, I would be mighty impressed and say that is the exception and not the norm.

The problem with tying yourself to a bad financial model from the get go is you are shooting your own foot. Release is far from the end of the road, stale content will drive people away much faster than a bank space or skill potion will. The thing about convenience items is they give the devs some slack to develop for the actual game, as they are recurrent purchases. Cosmetics do take time, would you rather have a new NPCs art mapped out, or some fluffy wings?

I have come across games where the cash grab was just as real towards cosmetics, and the game grew stale due to lack of content.

BDO has convenience items. Heck, doesn't the new anti p2w archeage have convenience items?

Yeah BDO has convenience items, but I do not have any knowledge about Archeage. Sorry, but I guess I missed your point. 🤔

"Many gaming companies do a good amount of money with cosmetics"

I was just saying this statement is pretty false for mmos. Most have cosmetics and convenience items. Which I think is completely worth it to keep out enchanted equipment and gem rolls haha

Ideally a subscription model would be nice. But since DS started selling packs without requiring a sub, that would be quite the can of worms to open.

@Pluto : Think of it as seeing your favourite sweater beeing on sale, later on. You never know if that will happen and if they have the right size available then. You need to take risk some time to make sure you get what you want.

I think you know that isn't a valid analogy, but I do appreciate trying to justify it lol. In the end it is just scummy behavior.

Counter argument: Think of it like a tool you are researching and developing. Someone who has backed you through thick and thin and at the earliest hour. You give the tool to them for X. New guy comes around and you give them the tool for .8X. Hmmm. Bad business for sure

To invalidate that argument further, they opened up even more packs for the sale when they sold out

but prices naturally drop on manufactured goods. i bought a headset on KS, after the headset was delivered i found out it was being sold for the same price i bought it for via KS but was told it'd retail for more. oh well.

Interestingly, fractured is not a manufactured good. It is not even a released good or service.

So someone who has enough money to only work 30 hours a week (thus saving 10 hours to play) is pay to win because they have more time to gear up than another player.

Sorry, being cheeky... But we will just have to agree to strongly disagree. If fractured is pay to win under your stipulations, I am totally fine with it.

DS needs to keep the lights on, which cannot always be done with simple cosmetics

But wait, are cosmetics not pay to win as well? If you have to grind out coin to buy a cloak cosmetic, but someone can just buy it... They can clearly gain an advantage since they have time to gear 😉

      Sorry, still being cheeky lol

I don't follow, unless we are making gross exaggerations. When a newbie can be just as viable in a PvP battle in comparison to a vet... That 10% extra knowledge points is not going to win a battle.

Battles will be won with tactics, numbers, and skill/timing of abilities. Not a 10% knowledge buff, which can be obtained without paying too

I swear these p2w arguments are like crying wolf where p2w is the wolf of course haha.

It really all depends on how much progression there is for guilds (owning territory/cities needs to be important and constantly in flux) and how horizontal progression works for players.

Am I worried about it? Nah. I am just curious what else they will compromise on (referring to selling certain packs for cheaper than the kickstarter of course).

Any indie project can flop. It is always a risk

    • RE: Rhykker Mention of "Pay for Convenience"

How I look at it is this, they are interested in horizontal progression meaning even if someone "progresses faster" via some 10% knowledge increase potion or some such nonsense, they are not really getting ahead. They are not stronger than the next person.

Furthermore, I have said it countless times... But all things should be purchase-able by "free" players. It might take a good amount of coin, but thay potion should be available

We do not even know if that is what they mean by convenience items.

Yep, that is the best way to do it. There are plenty of good names out there haha

Even if it is 2 years after launch... you just need some creativity, which I woefully lack. So thankfully I will be there a bit earlier 😉

Yeah, because they totally have not updated us in over a year. Oh wait... That does not seem right.

Shows october 9th for me, and then august? Sure, they usually give us monthly updates at the very least. And they have, if you consider community pills which I do

I would rather they spend time developing than wasting time meticulously molding content and mincing words for more updates. We already know what the game is going to look like. Giving even more granular insights would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Going forward I would appreciate updates on what is being developed.

Unfortunately the latter is becoming a more and more rare quality. Especially for more niche games, which I would argue fractured is.

Dual universe is giving it a try, hope it pans out for them. As once again, niche game. Thankfully they are going down the PLEX route, hopefully that will keep in the anti subs people.

Anyway, I think it is clear they do not want pay to win in the traditional sense. But everyone has a different definition, hard to please everyone while remaining viable. Heck, some would complain PLEX was p2w back in the old sub model and as such DU is p2w

I'm his customer & I'm far more deadly.

lets keep death threats and person harm out of this.

Did you seriously take that as a legitimate threat haha? I think he was being facetious

As in customers can tank a project faster than a manager can. Which, is actually pretty accurate... But not when it's a singular customer. Unfortunately mob mentality usually favores the "white knights" of a project until it's too late. I think criticism should always be welcomed, no team is perfect. DS is no exception, let's get back to those community pill updates yeah?

Not saying that is what is going on here, but just my observation from other projects

That’s the great thing about games that have (insert plex, dacs, etc) game time tokens that can be traded in game. Some games allow you to change the game time token into premium currency instead. So you have a choice of 1 month of game time, or X premium currency.

There’s always those that complain it gives the person who originally sold the token an advantage, but to be honest... pay to win to me means you cannot achieve what a paying player is doing through game time. This actually alleviates that problem entirely, as anything can be purchased with in game player made currency

I’m always of the opinion that it’s important to open up all purchases to free players as well, and this is a great way to do it.

In one swoop you take out both pay to win AND third party RWT.

Mid October isn’t for like a week. And even then, I wouldn’t hold devs to a deadline posted out of good will on the forums.

Do you really want them to no longer give us estimates because they can’t trust us to be adults about it?

In any case the port has taken longer than they expected, it’s nearing completion and may even be done. There should be an update soon, just have to be patient

Yep, that’s one thing that bothers me about the future. Studios are really trying to push social media integration, and sometimes they forget about the more classical avenues. As someone who doesn’t really use social media, I miss out on a lot of info and it’s a shame.
