      Hi, fellow gamer! Welcome to Fractured and to our very first developer journal! Today is the day we've decided to make the project public to everyone. Read on if you want to know why we are making Fractured, who we are, and if you want to follow us through this coming long journey.

      In the last few years, sandbox MMOs have found a new popularity. A few well-though products have already been announced and are in different phases of their development cycle. We know you know. So why making another one? - you might ask. The answer is easy: because we believe there’s plenty of overlooked room for innovation in the genre. Grinding is still a plague that prevents those of you who don’t have plenty of hours to play each week from enjoying a MMO in full. Controls and combat are often no different from the clichés of the genre that were established 15 years ago. Worlds are mostly static - you’re surrounded by decorations you can’t interact with. Players who prefer cooperation to competition feel punished by game rules. We want to change it all.

      We’re a small team here at Dynamight Studios, 5 full-time employees and 3 freelancers as of today. Although we are open to the possibility of incorporating investors in the company in the future, so far we’ve been entirely self-funded. I feel you might be wondering if it’s actually possible for us to create a state-of-the-art MMO. Yes, it is.

      Back in the days, only large software houses with massive capitals to invest from day 1 could afford to start developing a MMO and hope to complete it in time. Luckily for us - and for all of you, I’d dare to say - this no longer holds true, as modern engines have dramatically cut the costs associated to the development of any game. This obviously applies to MMOs as well, but the real revolution for the genre is coming today with SpatialOS, a cloud-based world-building platform created by the British technology startup Improbable. That's the technology we've decided to build Fractured on.

      Notwithstanding all these new possibilities, it must be said that making a MMO is still a long, tough business, one that takes years of hard work and requires significant economic resources. In this regard too, however, new options have open up to small developers. Crowd-funding through Kickstarter is now a well-established route, and one we absolutely are looking forward to take advantage of in the future.

      On the homepage of our portal fracturedmmo.com you can already get a hint of what Fractured has to offer, but we’re well aware that’s not enough. That’s why over the coming weeks we’ll release regular updates detailing all the features of the game in the form of blog entries, videos and art showcases. We’ll also be active on our forums and social media pages on a daily basis, so that all of you will have a chance to speak directly with the team. We want to keep the development of Fractured as transparent as possible and truly involve all of you in the decisional process.

      It’s not going to be easy, but with your support, feedback and enthusiasm, we’re sure we’ll be able to make this dream a reality, together.

      Plants (non-trees) have only two versions, harvested and not. Doing several stages for them as well would take a tad too long 🙂

      Only large items such as logs and blocks of stone must be carried by hand, and they can usually stack up to 2 or 3 units, yes. Kindlings are a small item, you can keep them in your inventory 🙂

      Hi @Bastic, the reason why you didn't have your pledge assigned is because you never completed the "kickstarter survey" (which asked for your Fractured account username) that we sent to all backers after the campaign was over.

    • Patch Log - b.1.0e - Fixes & A Little Balancing

      Hi all,

      patch b10e is coming out today at 4.30pm CET (10.30am EST). With it comes the promise attribute respec timer reset!

      Please note this is a small patch, mostly for bug fixes.

      Archery

      • The Longbow is now a Slow weapon (higher base damage, lower speed). You know how important this is for all the abilities that include Base Weapon Damage in the equation. The final DPS is actually about 6% higher than it used to be, too. The arrow still comes at the very start of the animation, so it should be as playable as before.
      • Shortbow & Primitive Bow base damage: +11%.
      • Guided Shot now deals extra Piercing damage instead of Energy and stacks with PER instead of INT.
      • Double Shot damage coefficient now fixed at 5%xPER instead of [3%-4.5%]xPER.

      Other Balance Stuff

      • Mage Staff (all) base damage: +11%.
      • Just a little change here. We have a proper deep rework in mind to make them competitive vs sword + shield.
      • Ember Dragon Breath: damage/s reduced from 20-30xINT to 16-24xINT and stacks/s reduced from 1xINT to 0.5xINT.
      • Arboreal Dragon Breath: stacks/s reduced from 1.8xINT to 1.5xINT.
      • Skeletal Dragon Breath: damage/s reduced from 20-30xINT to 16-24xINT.

      Send To Jail

      • Sending a criminal to jail is no longer performed when executing it. Instead, it's performed as a separate action on the ghost of the dead criminal after it's been executed.
      • The change fixes tricks such as using Death Bargain or getting executed by a friend to avoid being jailed.
      • Of course, dead criminals can't respawn right away, but have to wait for 1 minute, while they can now suicide immediately after KO, since that's no longer a problem.

      Bug Fixes

      • Sea Turtles now spawn on Terra. Turtles! This really had to be the first bugfix mentioned.
      • Players should no longer respawn under the floor of town halls. Since we could never reproduce this issue locally or live, we had to guess a solution for what might be the issue live.
      • Doors of houses can no longer create an invisible blocker in front of them.
      • Fixed a sneaky bug that made it so that any time the client received an update regarding cities, the UI of the harbor would reset, and the poor player would then accidentally request to travel to the last city of the list instead of the one selected.
      • Enrage and Death Bargain are no longer usable during sieges. The latter created a serious bug, and anyway invulnerability is no good in sieges.
      • Siege Tents and Town Halls now correctly protect players from PvP within them during sieges.
      • Death Mark now breaks correctly when targets travel too far away and no longer reduces Evasion.

    • Feature Spotlight #2 - Universe, Planets and Travels

      Hi everyone,

      the August hiatus is over and the second Fractured Feature Spotlight is finally live!

      The first part of the spotlight describes the universe of Fractured more in detail - how it came to be, what it looks like today, and what are the characteristics of its three planets Arboreus, Syndesia and Tartaros.

      In the second part, we unveil eclipses, recurring events that have a huge impact on the lives of Demons and Humans.

      Last but not least, we discuss the idea of “travel” in Fractured and drop some hints regarding the survival elements that exist in the game.

    • Patch Log - b.0.6g (Free Play Event)

      Hi all,

      we are relasing this patch in preparation of the Free Play Event to make everything as smooth as possible there! Let's check out all that it's bringing!

      Optimization

      • The continent of Terra is being migrated to the same server type as the one hosting Aerhen now (different CPU architecture).
      • We have redefined the logic that determines what server process controls what entities in the world. This is too technical to explain in detail, but in a nutshell, it should better distribute load over different areas of the world.

      Changes

      • Added quality to tooltips of equip items.
      • Added tier (1-3) to tooltips of abilities (replaces school level).
      • Changed description of bandages and other consumables suggesting to add them to the hotbar to use them.
      • It is now clearer in tooltips that the bonus given by materials to armor is for the full set.
      • Updated pins of resource nodes in world maps.
      • Quantity output by crafting is now shown in item icon in crafting menu.
      • Monsters now stop spawning inside of claimed land parcels.

      Bug Fixes

      • Gathering items shows correct text above player's head (actual item name instead of object key).
      • Added weight to recipes of Round Shield and Wooden Shield.
      • Fixed items in loot of Deer Doe.
      • Wildfolk Chadra and Erwydra no longer get full armor set bonus without helmet.
      • The tooltip of abilities opened from the Skills and Abilities menu show again what monsters use them.
      • Some missing special properties of equip items (e.g. headdresses) are now correctly shown in tooltips.
      • Fixed stockpile blueprint and forge blueprint placement.
      • Fixed bridge on Aerhen at -1138,561.
      • It's no longer possible to build 5x5 houses on 4x4 plots on Terra.
      • Burning Pillar and Barrage now hurt the caster and allies in PvP.
      • Shocking Touch can no longer be used with bows.
      • Fixed a bug that made toggle spells not reactivate when dismounting after changing server process (moving to different areas of the map).
      • Fixed a bug that made mana regen being miscalculated after changing server process (moving to different areas of the map) with active toggle spells.
      • Items being processed in processing stations (e.g. smeltery) are now correctly saved at restart. Sadly they will be lost again for this restart since the fix is part of the patch. Apologies!
      • +0 green text no longer shown when using bandages.
      • Fixed missing harbor in Aerhen.

      @Helix @humerus @JBuben we expect that at most 10k people will "live" (= have their home) on each continent. Something between 5k and 10k is more reasonable. Given there are 9 continents, that'd make it between 45k - 90k MAU (Monthy Active Users) per "server" (universe / world, call it as you like - behind the scenes, each universe is not a single server but a cloud of servers).

      Translating MAU to CCU (Concurrent Users) is not easy. Technically there can be 2k users connected in the same continent at the same time, but PvE hotspots would become very busy in such a scenario. 1k CCU per continent at peak times is more realistic 🙂

    • Hero and Guild creation now live in The Foundation

      Hi fellow Humans, Beastmen and Demons,

      work on our upcoming Kickstarter campaign and Alpha 1 is moving on at a super-intense pace here at house Dynamight, but we haven't forgotten to keep you up to date with some exciting news about Fractured! This time it's not a Feature Spotlight we're releasing, though - it's a new expansion of The Foundation, featuring character and guild creation.

      Why have we decided to add all of this to the Fractured web portal? Above all, it's been to allow you to:

      • Share your future profile with other members of the community.
      • Find new friends to team up with for social and/or competitive reasons.
      • Gain a couple additional levels right away - we're sure you won't mind that! 😉

      So, let's have a more detailed look at what you can do from today on.


      Hero Creation

      To create your character you just have to open this page, that can also be reached through the Foundation button in the navigation bar of fracturedmmo.com.

      When creating your character, you can choose your race/family, the god you worship, and your alignment. Moreover, you're able to add a long background story for your character, if you fancy some good old role-playing!

      During character creation, your race limits what gods you can choose, which in turn restricts your alignment options. The combinations available are designed according to the lore and gameplay mechanics we've revealed in Feature Spotlight #1 and #2. In this regard, you might notice that both Beastmen and Demons can choose a Neutral alignment - be it Lawful, Chaotic, or True Neutral.

      This doesn't mean your future game characters will be able to start on a different planet or enjoy a special ruleset, but you can use this feature to signal other players that your personal disposition doesn't follow the Fractured's racial canon.


      Guild Creation

      Once you have created your character, you'll able to make it join any existing guild or start your own. Both guild creation and searching for other guilds are available in this page, which is linked in the navigation bar as well.

      When forming a guild, you can choose a unique name for it, a tag, its race, and write a long description explaining its rules, history, purpose - whatever you fancy. Once the guild is created, you'll become its Guildmaster. To share your duties with friends you trust, you'll be able to promote Regular members to Lieutenants, endowing them with powers such as accepting new members and kicking existing ones.

      If you want to join a guild, just visit the guild's page through the Search Guild button, or have another player share the guild's link with you (it's enough to copy-paste the url of the page!). Once you've requested membership, you just have to wait for the Guildmaster or a Lieutenant to accept you!

      Please mind that, as explained above, guilds are race-restricted - that is, characters of different races can't be in the same guild. Consequently, some options such as deleting your character and changing its race might be disabled or limited when you're in a guild or have requested to become a member of one. This limitation is not set in stone for the actual game, though.


      Final Remarks

      This is just the first iteration of character and guild creation in The Foundation. In the coming weeks, we're going to expand them with some nice additions such as:

      • More colors and symbols for your guild banner.
      • Guild ranking in the leaderboard.
      • Some formatting options for hero backgrounds and guild descriptions.
      • A preview of the attributes that you'll be able to assign to a new character when you create a real one in game.

      Of course, please mind that the names, tags and descriptions you upload must comply with our Terms of Service. Violations of the terms might lead to profiles being edited and the underlying accounts suspended.

      What's next? Something HUGE: the much awaited Feature Spotlight dedicated... to the Knowledge System!

    • Patch Log - r.0.0f - AFK Timer & Bank Fix

      Hi all,

      we've finally caught the bug that under extremely unlikely and convoluted circumstances caused the content of a player's bank to be saved incorrectly.

      Together with this fix, we've also added a disconnection timer for AFK players (triggers after 30 minutes of inactivity). This is going to prevent a lot of characters from dying of starvation 😉

      (the patch also contains some other stuff, but it's all internal - improved loggings, admin commands, etc)

      We'll try to implement male/female options wherever it makes sense for both Beastmen and Demons, such as the Blood Demon (Vampire) or the Erwydra (Hart-Kin). For other sub-races however, such as the Hellfire Demon (Infernal) or the Nheedra (Bear-Kin), it wouldn't really make sense, so their gender will be undefined 🙂

      I feel your pain Mez - it's ours too. However, you need to understand that making an MMO - one with Fractured's scope especially - is no small deal. Screenshots and video footages will be available once they are good to be presented to the public and the press, since many players fail to understand the idea of "alpha graphics", sadly.

      Hi @koylor! Even on Syndesia, the human planet, your house is safe - if you set the access level of an item or a container to "owner only", no one will be able to interact with it.

      If your house is located in a town and that town conquered by another group, you might get kicked out, but you'll still have time to move your goods elsewhere 🙂

      Hi everybody!

      Today, we've released the first issue of a new type of Fractured blog entry: a State Of The Game update! The aim here is to give you a detailed account on the progress being made on the development of Fractured - including what features we’ve added and what challenges we had to face.

      Now, I know what you're going to say... Yes, it’s been a while since the last blog update. We’re well aware of that, and I'd like to apologize to you for such a long wait. As common in such cases, the reason of the delay is a combination of multiple factors.

      First of all, the whole team has been focused on the development of some features and art assets that will soon allow us to release the first screenshots and videos of Fractured. All that’s being developed is of course not only finalized to the production of game footage but is also an essential part of Alpha 1, which is set to be released in late 2018 (as planned). The update we've just released explains it all! :slight_smile:

      Since Dynamight only employs one full-time developer and we wanted to push the accelerator, I went back to active game development myself. The move has worked well, but has taken away a considerable portion of time. Additionally, an annoying surgery has kept me out of the office for a couple weeks. Bad luck never comes alone! 😉

      That being said... let us know what you think about this new type of dev journal and stay tuned for the upcoming game footage!

      In the last Feature Spotlight, we’ve given you an overlook on the types of abilities available on Fractured and the Schools of Magic & Fighting that group them. In doing so, we’ve mentioned what attribute(s) influence the power of each school among the six available ones.

      Today, we’re going to discuss each attribute in detail – and while we’re at it, how your choice of race and family can influence your attribute assignment decisions during character creation.

      Last but not least, we will cover the missing bit of the Knowledge System – the Resting phase, through which the concept of “every day a new gameplay” comes to life.

      Sorry to see you go @FibS, you've been an important member of this community for months now. I understand following the journey of a crowdfunded MMO is not everyone's cup of tea.

      That being said, funding the game is of course very important for us, but activity in the community is equally relevant, so no one should feel left aside because of Kickstarter pledges and "titles".

      Hope you'll keep an eye on Fractured and come back here later!

      A couple clarifications:

      • Buildings require maintenance. Your own house, farm or other constructions will decay over time and eventually collapse if not maintained. The Carpenter NPC takes care of the issue for you!
      • VIP membership includes bonuses such as additional Learning Slots, increased Knowledge Point gains, discounts on Store items and unique cosmetic rewards for accumulated VIP time. It's only time savers and cosmetic stuff - we're not selling power there!
